Hacking tools?

I am doing a course on ethical hacking and would like to know if there are any practice tools out there that simulate a network that you can try out the tools.

Or would it be better to setup a small network of computers and do it that way?

Maybe you could set up one virually with vmware.

Yes, either set up a network of virtual pc's, using as said vmware, or virtualbox, or even better if you have the hardware lying around set up some physical boxes to play around with, IMO you will want at least 3 networked boxes/VMs to practice on.
