Hi.

It's not for me but I'm thinking 5820 and 32gb to start with room for 64gb or more.

There could be a large raid array involved so if pci lanes are important then beefier CPUs will be considered.

Just the platform for now but needs thunderbolt 2 card as well.

Budget is what it needs to be but obviously less than equivalent mac.

It's being rack mounted so case suggestions are welcome.

As a pro rig we'll be asking oc to build this.

Thanks.

64gb is the max possible for the 5820 and similar consumer chips. You will require a xeon e5v3 chip if at any stage you decide more ram is required. It's likely a workstation board will be a sensible bet.

A Highend Protools build is a lot more than just the combined parts. Memory and Mhz is the least of the worries.

DPC latency can have a huge impact, which is partly of why propper workstations are costly. Significant research, testing and configuration of specific hardware, bios's and drivers can guarantee stability at optimum non interrupted stable performance.

Even items such as mice cause issues.

A wise line of advice is to step back and research properly, you easily can build something that seems fine at first however may have unresolvable latency spikes due to a specific part. Such a blip in a real time pro recording environment are unacceptable.

Such things don't effect normal computer users - we just don't notice them. Or if we do it's irrelevant. Get a split second stutter in a game once in a while, who cares? Get a split second stutter in a live recording and it's ruined. This could be down to a driver polling the OS for a reason.

The cost of resolving such issues or having that could be perferct performance not so perfect due to a issue, can be much higher than investing in a system designed for the task.

Using unsinged drivers for mac os is asking for yet even more trouble.

I'm not saying it's not possible and that a great system can be made for a significant saving. Just be aware before throwing 1000's at something that may not be upto the task.
