Had a bash at a portrait shot

Took this pic of my grandad sittin in our sunhouse, dont think he knew it was being taken- i messed around with it a bit, but my breezebrowser trial ran out and i dont rightly know how to use the canon raw stuff yet.

I would say its more candid than portrait.

Its a nice candid, cant help thinking you've added a bit too much contrast to it or his face is too shadowed.

Not bad, but may I suggest some changes(all my opinion, so you may choose to ignore them if you want )

You should have shot it slightly lower so that his eyeline was a tiny bit higher in the picture. Less contrast, you seem to have lost quite a bit of detail in the shadows(Or keep the contrast but make the image b&w?) You should have used a bigger aparture to throw the background out of focus. Just my 2p
