Right heres my story, I first got broadband years and years ago through bt this was when engineer had to come out install a seperate socket blah blah which was in my room and its always been connected through that! i use a netgear dg834g router

Now i changed onto aol years back and ive been with them for years, now normally when the speed went up a while back ive been connected at 3500kbits, downloading at around 280kb/s which is fast and good.

Now last week its been connecting at lots of different speeds all under 1000kbits, ive had 500kbits, 100kbits and even 50kbits!

Now ive tried lots of stuff and its still the same, so fone aol help, its quite hard being able to understand there tech help but anyway...

They say its due to im using this socket upstairs thats why its going slow so I tell them ive been using it for years and its been fine, it was instlaled a bt engineer dedicated to ADSL!

but no they wont have it and they say i should be using the one downstairs?!? with a filter?? I dont use filters because i had this dedicated box put in from bt for adsl and always used that, so they said I have to disconnet all phones and sky to see if it changes and just use this one upstairs still..

what do people recommend to do because i cant get any further with them they are useless but its really annoying me going slow, any ideas?!

Get a MAC code and move, we've had similar problems with Tiscali. Fact is someone people have their home equipment setup really poorly and those questions are purely to sort that out and to delay you from leaving. It's highly unlikely that a filter, or a different socket would make such an impact on your performance but you have to do as requested and report back that it didn't make any improvement.

You're options are simply, keep jumping through hoops or get that MAC code mate.

Is it just an extension up to your room from the master socket downstairs with just a BT socket on the end, if so they do deterioate (sp?) overtime, my dad used to use an exension like that to his, but one day it just wouldn't connect anymore (this was after a good couple of years), AOL said to try the master socket, so after carrying the whole PC downstairs to try it, it worked still, so we got a proper CAT5 cable to carry the signal up there, so if it is just an extension with a BT socket on the end, and not a proper new line up there, then it could be deteriorating (sp?).

Have you tried taking it downstairs and connecting to the master socket directly, to see if the speeds are still the same or better.

Id agree about getting a MAC though, Talk Talk are awfull, you now have traffic shaping/throttling, and an FUP to deal with on there now.

Kami, how is removing a variable a delaying tactic ? The op hasn't asked for a MAC, he called about a fault and they asked him to do fault finding, it's been done to death over the years that filters like any electrical component can and do fail, extensions can be problematic to say the least.

Theultimate - If you move ISP's and it is a wiring fault you're going to have the same problem, far better to check it now and eliminate the wiring as the cause then move than move ISP's and find out it's the same.

If you are moving check samknows for LLU options in your area, you mention you have Sky and they are one of the operators i'd suggest considering especially if you can get LLU with them, Be are also very good, if not it's probably an Enta reseller for the best value for money but the network is taking a hammering at peak times of late due to them being the reccomended option for so long.
