Been using it for a while now and it's starting to annoy me. It crashes once or twice a week and some bits of some websites don't work (and it's not an addon that's causing this, I've turned them all off to test). It also seems to use a fair bit of ram.

So...

How does this compare with chrome? Can I expect a lighter program that just does what a browser is supposed to do without all the fluff? Can chrome be customised in any way? I use the twentyten addon with firefox and like the clean look.

must admit im a firefox lovery but lately it does just hang up and freeze then sort itself out I dont understand why :(

I officially switched to Chrome a few weeks after it came out on OS X. I miss one or two addons from Firefox such as FlashGot to integrate it with Leech but that's about it. Speedy browsing and it never crashes. Not that many apps do in OS X ;)

I reckon they should start again with firefox, it seems far too unreliable and bloaty these days. A good name for the new version would be Phoenix or something.

Opera, give it a good try, its so good.

As an example:
Trying to get glasto tickets this year, I had a PC and a mac both with FF, Opera, Chrome and Safari constantly refreshing the page to get tickets, I had 'Turbo Mode' enabled on Opera (compresses images loads, only useful if you don't care about images), and guess the only browser to get through. I use FF, Safari and Chrome Mac; Safari for Facebook (its light and nice) Opera for Forums and browsing and FF for downloading things.

However if I could only use 1 ever again, it would be Opera.

Give it a go, see what you think.

i'm pretty sure FF has a beefy memory leak - i can watch my ram usage climb slowly with FF open, and it uses over 500mb with about 15 or so tabs open, but this will increase over time

Right, I'm now viewing this forum in opera:) Gotta say I like it... Seems pretty snappy and It's got a nice clean look that isn't courtesy of a third party addon, something I suspect is causing half of my problems with firefox.

I'll stick with it for a while and see how I get on...

Same, using about 500mb here at the moment. Sometimes the CPU usage spikes up too :/

Has Opera removed that annoying and experience ruining "feature" when you click the scroll wheel it centres the mouse pointer? I remember using it a few years ago and finding that highly annoying and basically preventing me from using it seriously.
