Just thinking about covering up the side vents on the panels that sit at the side of the HDD's the air from the front fan just seems to come blowing straight out of them instead of going into the system..

has anyone else blocked up and of the vents are there case and seen an improvement on temps?

the vents in question are at the bottom right of the pic

Before you consider this, it isn't necessarily a bad thing having air coming out of the vents. If you have air coming out of those vents it indicates you have positive pressure inside the case (more air being blown into the case than is being sucked out by the venting fans).

This means the only dust getting into the case is via the fans drawning air into it and not from the various gaps and vents in the case itself, perfect if you filter the fans drawing air in, especially on such a windy case.

However covering them will just mean the air escapes elsewhere so it isn't like it will kill your airflow and positive pressure.

Just throw some gaffer tape over them and see what happens, easy to do and gaffer tape wont leave residue on your case. I imagine the effect would be negligable though.

I think the dust must depend on how clean the house is as I didnt have a problem with my HAF getting really dusty inside.

yeah i'm 3-4 weeks in using it not cleaned it yet but had a look last night and the dust was very minimal. but as a rule i give my cases a quick blast every 4 weeks anyway.

anyway back on subject i taped over all the other vents apart from where the fans are and it gave me a 1-2 degree temp difference on the gpu thats it lol so today i went a bit further and covered up every hole and gap i could fine (just as a test really)and yes i even covered the front bays and the difference was amazing absolutely nothing lol case temps and gpu temp stayed the same. To be honest i think the HAF is very optimised for the stock fans.

just out of subject can anyone reccomend a good after market cooler for the 4870 sick of the fan hitting 70% while playing crysis especially in the cut scenes, sounds like my case it about to take off.

Arctic cooling Accelero TWIN TURBO was the one I used and found very good (a lot cooler & quieter) just the cost and the fact that OcUk do not appear to stock any more might put you off a bit.(Use a Haf 932 myself and found the standard cooler VERY noisy - the twin Turbo was much better - could hardly hear it:D)

Altenatives would be the

Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2 - with/without fan. (I've used one of these on an 8800gt and is running cool and quiet now -as of 2yrs approx.)

A http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-047-AK&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=787 - I have read that this is very good and comes pretty cheap.
If you decide to change cooler just keep an eye on your vddc temps ; I remember i got a bit concerned - see link
