HAF X Cooling/Airflow Query

Hey guys/gals,

I've current got an air-cooled Coolermaster HAF X case and was considering purchasing a Corsair H100 cooler to help improve my CPU temps.

I've currently got all the fans on the case set up as they were on purchase, however I was considering reversing the top fan so that it would be pulling in air from outside the case to ensure the radiator which would be mounted just below the top fan was receiving cool air.

This however would mean that I'd end up with only one exhaust on the case, so I was thinking I could perhaps attach a 120mm fan to the front of the case where the 5.25" bays are so that the airflow would end up as I've illustrated below.

Does this sound like a feasible idea? I'd be grateful for any criticisms or better ideas.

Thanks

Corsair advise that air is pulled into the case through the radiator, as you have it (at least they do with the H80).

I would just see how you get on with the front/side intake, intake through the H100 rad, and single high flow exhaust on the rear, remember your GPU(S) will be exhausting too, provided they are reference design.

have the 2 front fans as intakes amd a side fan if fitted
also the psu is right, intake from below.
the top and rear fans as exhausts.
that way you will have cool air from the front of the case blowing over the mobo, and being sucked out through the radiator.

Wouldn't the fact that warm air is blowing into the radiator result in less than optimal cooling? That was pretty much the only reason I considered reversing the top fans so that they were intake fans instead of exhausts.

I've got a HAF X case as well. I'm no expert on cooling but from the HAF X design and other cases I think a key factor is having an airflow pathway. You don't want your outtake fans to be sucking fresh cold air out.

For this reason you want your intake flows to merge rather than clash and then in merging travel over your equipment and out the intake. That is the rational behind the set up of the HAF X as standard.

The side fan, front fan and Gfx card fan are all sucking cold air in at the bottom that cold air rises over the mobo and the CPU fan gets a nice portion of it before it's all blown out the top and rear.

I like the HAF X design. I wouldn't alter the way they have it designed. Perhaps just see if you can add some extra juice to it. Or there is always the handy Water cooling crocks in the back :P

Considering its a dust monster i would want the above as my airflow.Thats going to force a lot of air out the gaps where air normally gets sucked in if both top 200mm fans are exhausting.

as for only having one 120mm exhaust just make sure its a good one as i think thats perfectly acceptable considering graphics cards are also going to be exhausting air.and the fact that u have the top two fans pre filtered to turn into a huge intake sounds good as well. Also if you take this route put the dvd-rw at the bottom of the bays as it wont block air.

Im going to be using the same system as you but with the smaller HAF 912 plus. The only exhaust is the rear 120mm.
