Hi there

I generally hear 8 Pack getting excited over Intel CPU's for his special projects, it is rarely AMD because for what Ian does generally frequency speed is very important as is memory performance.

However over the past couple of weeks this has changed, 8 Pack has being talking very highly of AMD's new Thread Ripper CPU's.

So 8 Pack has been playing with the 3960X processors and has reported back to me the following:

- 4.50GHz single boost as advertised, this is important because Ryzen 3 rarely hits it single core boost underload, whereas Thread Ripper does so underload, sometimes even more than one core.
- 4.3GHz all core over clock, which for a 24/48 processor is rather amazing, its a solid 500MHz above what the last generation thread ripper could achieve.
- 256Gb RAM at 3200MHz stable using the Corsair 64Gb dual channel Vengeance Pro RGB kits.
- 128Gb RAM at 3600MHz stable using the 8 Pack 64Gb quad channel Samsung B-Die kits.

We are excited to test the 3970X in the coming weeks as it is no doubt better binned so should be able to achieve higher boost and higher all core clock potentially, particular impressive for a 32/64 part.

Remember these are aimed at HEDT market, but due to the much improved frequency boost and overclocking results along with improved IPC and memory frequency they of course game exceptionally well too.

If you want to essentially build the most powerful machine you can for a desktop / workstation then the above pretty much accomplishes that. :)

@Gibbo Just wanted to chime and say your comment about "Gen3 rarely hitting its box rated speed" is actually incorrect, my 3800x hits 4.55ghz on 2 cores pretty much 24/7, it'll hit 4.2 on all cores when under heavy load, but on lighter loads it will happily hit and sit at 4.55ghz and its only rated 4.5ghz on the box. Also this is with PBO Disabled as quite frankly that seems to do ZERO to these chips lol

But it has taken a while to get here and it has required using newer power plans, newer bios etc on the X570 Taichi, but i wanted to say its simply no longer true that Gen3 Ryzen does not hit its box rated speeds, infact for most of us that have worked with the bios's and power plans etc, it now normally boosts over the rated speed :)

Waiting to see some reviews on the boards before ordering.
Overclock 3D has the Aorus Xtreme, Zenith II Extreme and MSI Creator up. Much praise to Asus for continuing being solid, and huge praise to Gigabyte for being monstrous and solid even without the latest BIOS tweaks.

They are the top-end boards of course, so if £700+ isn't your style then you'll have to wait for the lower boards to get some reviewing love.

@Gibbo any indication when the Gskil 3800C14 will hit the stores? Is announced 4 months now.

We won't be doing it I am afraid, we are pretty much phasing all G.Skill out, they supply is just terrible and we can't work with a supplier who cannot fulfill our orders, it is a shame as some of their SKU's are fantastic but apart from Royal we really see no USP offered by them.

I've got my eye on the Strix.

That's a real shame as imo it's some of the nicest memory on the market. I'd genuinely go looking for it above pretty much anything else certainly over the skus listed.

I'm not entirely sure why either.

Quality of G.Skill can it be denied on their high-end Trident and Royal stuff only memory we sell on par IC and quality heatspreader wise is 8 Pack stuff and Corsair Dominator is very good quality too but IC can be unknown on CORSAIR.

TDP too high. Reviewers note >400w at the wall.

New chipset required and they cost too much.

Price too high for the CPUs and there is no increase in core count over the previous gen, which was better value.

When the 64 core is finally released it will be ridiculously priced and have ridiculous power consumption.

Finally: 16 cores is already overkill for gaming and I don't see a 16 core option here. Even if it were, it would be a poorer binned part.

The power figures at 400 at the wall is actually very good considering a clocked 10980 cant match them and draws >600 at the wall. Per core power draw is frankly amazing. As for money, well money is money, if you want the best of the best then you pay the associated costs.
