Can't afford to pay someone to cut my hair for me so I'm gonna have a go at it myself untill I can afford it lol

I've got clippers and I know I usually have it done grade 4 on the top and grade 2 on the sides, but the attatchments for the clippers I've got dont say what grade by number they just say mm and inches.

Does anyone know what grades 2 and 4 are in inches or mm?

Hair trim length is given in either grades or millimeters, with grade numbers being standard set lengths, which are used by hairdressers. Below is a conversion table for grade lengths to millimeters:

Looks like they are in 1/8ths of an inch per grade. source
 
I've got a number 8, that would be pretty country and western on the back and sides.
 
I shave mine to 3mm every fortnight or so. However, my clippers have a setting to adjust the clipping distance in 3 ways for each clip. Ie. 3mm is the furthest away, and you can get 2 and 1. I stick with 3 at the moment, though.

Hope they're ceramic .

I Clipper my ample follicle jungle and the above seems about right.

Although now i can't be bothered with the guards , so i'm about a grade 0.5

A grade 4 on the top and a grade 2 on the sides , sounds like a Mullet to me :D

I've never really had a routine for my hair. When I was 15 I decided that I wasn't going to get it cut anymore and I didn't until I was 18 (had it cut a few months ago). I like my hair at any length, I can usually do something with it that I'm happy with. I like it keep it short now though.
 
I have to wonder how hard times are when you cant afford the £8 or whatever for a barber's time.

Dont do it yourself unless you plan to shave it all off.
 
Use a grade 1 on mine now, have a beard at grade 1 too so looks like I have permanent stubble. Got a new girlfriend within a week of starting this SHE ASKED ME OUT!

must admit I like having it so short, no intention of letting it grow and I trim it every 3 days. I did try it without the guard but I have a few scars on my head and it just ended up in a lot of blood :(

I was going to try a grade 3/4 but it wouldn't cut my hair properly (too fine) and i thought it'd look a bit odd... like a short haired hedgehog :p

Was speaking to some guys at work and quite a lot are now adopting the bald head motto, not that they are balding or anything but it does look cleaner/better.

my m8 even said shaving off his head was the best thing ever cos it feels so much cleaner and refreshing/

May have to pop to argoose and get some clippers :)
 
I didnt go to the barbers for like 10 years lol, been getting my fam to cut my hair (too tight ;) ) tbh wasnt bothered but last week went barbers finaly, asked about this grading system and he said well how u normaly get it done? just said short back/sides and front so he just done that lol.

But looking at the grades I can see grade 3/4 usualy for me quite a few were asking grade 1/2 but thats almost skinhead lol
