My gf got some black hair dye on a section of the bathroom vinyl flooring. It's a wooden style colour so the black blotches are pretty noticeable.

Struggling to get it removed! Have tried white spirit, shampoo, washing up liquid, even baking soda + lemon juice!

Anyone got any ideas? I'm tempted to try rubbing alcohol next and apparently white vinegar is good for this sort of thing?

If all else fails, will need to get the vinyl re done I think. Hopefully just that particular section but not sure if that can be done.

There is this US product called Goo Gone that apparently does wonders for this sort of thing. Only £4 so have ordered that too. In "Try everything mode". If toothpaste works will cancel the order once home.

Off the top of my head depending on what type of vinyl you have, it may have a top protective layer that you might be able to polish with t-cut or similar. We have Amtico flooring in our house and although I've never stained it with a spill yet, I do believe it has a clear protective top coat with the grain, and the color & pattern underneath.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the the idea. It's looking more and more like it ain't shifting sadly. I tried rubbing alcohol today, tooth paste, and white vinegar. No effect at all.

The "Goo Gone" product will arrive in a day or two. Am sceptical but few comments online about it working wonders. If it fails, I will look at t-cut. Is that a product that adds polish then? Not a cleaning one?

T-cut is an abrasive scratch remover used on cars. It works in a similar way to Cif, although I think Cif is coarser.

Nail polish remover/Acetone might work but if you use too much, it could damage the floor.

Thanks all, some great ideas coming along!

So Acetone / nail polish remover failed!

Next up will be Cif and WD40! Oven cleaner sounds worth a shot too!

If those fail, I will be close to accepting defeat. I spoke to the company that did the vinyl and, although I have a spare roll, they suggested it wouldn't be good idea to just replace single area as the join wouldn't be waterproof. So they recommended full replacement of whole bathroom floor.

Have you tried leaving the white spirit/acetone on the stain for a longer period?

Left acetone on for an hour or 2 and found it had dissolved. Might try White Spirit again and leave it on longer.

I'm beginning to get the feeling the dye has permanently altered the vinyl colouration. But who knows. Could just be insanely stubborn stuff.

Argh - in my head I thought it was LVT, not a roll of Lino.

It has almost certainly soaked in and discolored the vinyl then. If everything you've tried so far has had no effect, I would think it's going to be permanent.

I take it you now have a melted patch where the acetone was...
