Cut a long story short, friend of mine has a Compaq 6710b laptop, was updating it not connected to mains and it ran out of juice whilst the update was running.
Connected power and tried running it and now gets the error message that this is corrupt/missing.

No problem I thought, run the XP disc and perform a repair and map the replacement file.

The only problem is that when I try this after pressing 'R' to enter Repair mode I'm displayed with a message that Setup cannot find any hard disk drives installed on the computer. I've checked the connections and it seems to be running ok, am I missing something obvious?

Yeah you're gonna need to manually load the sata controller drivers, if hal.dll (the hardware abstraction layer) is busted it might be saveable, but it's part of the boot sequence and it'll take a lot of tooling around, best bet is to get those sata drivers loaded and do a repair

Sata drivers format and reinstall or repair install to save data. When Hal.dll is corrupt its the only way to get a fully functioning system again.

OK I'm being asked for some system disc and to insert it into Drive A. There's no floppy drive on here so I'm feeling a little stumped? The owner doesn't mind losing any stuff so we've taken the drive out and formatted it, still can't get it installed.
