Halal Food - WTF?

I never realised Halal animals weren't stunned.

I was told by someone that should know about it that they were stunned in the vast majority of cases. On that basis I was relatively happy for it to happen as Mohinder described.
They are, it's just the usual anti religion nonsense going on in here, a thread worthy of GD with all the rubbish in it. People like posting hard liner snippets and ignore the majority view and what actually happens.

And yes most of it is stunned.

But EU research from 2006 indicated that 75% of cattle, 93% of sheep and 100% of chickens slaughtered in the UK for halal meat were stunned prior to their deaths. Figures produced by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in 2011 give a similar picture: 84%, 81% and 88%, respectively.

Meanwhile, Denmark and New Zealand have both legislated to ensure that all animals killed for halal meat are stunned first.

Agreed. This thread gave me massive GD vibes when I read through it earlier. Sad really, as La Cuisine is mostly free of that normally.

Good to see that the OP is permabanned now though.

Funnily enough same way I feel.

Anyone who wants to fly their flag of tolerance should go live in said neighbourhoods and come back post your opinion. Take halal meat and go shove it. You live in the UK now want halal go back to where you came from where you can continue to live in the dark ages stoning people to death and causing animals unnecessary suffering.

a man that talks pure sense.

There is so much more to halal then is mentioned here. In fact there are a lot of very humane principals that must be adhered to in order for it to even classified as halal. A lot of this having to do with the handling of the animals, not letting them see their friends being killed etc....

Stunning is acceptable in islam, even more so on the basis on it being more less painful for the animal.

As cruel as the way Halal meat is made, I find a certain irony in people bashing Halal meat e.g. chicken.

Don't kill them without stunning them.
Don't make them suffer at the last moment of their live.

Yet battery hens are tolerated because there is a demand for affordable meat. Every time you buy a chicken that's not labelled 'Free Range', it can only come from mass farming so you can get chicken at £3.50 each, compared to a £7 for the same weight to weight Free Range variety.

Go to Nandos, go to KFC, go to your local fast food/takeaway, just because the meat isn't Halal, do you automatically get a satisfaction to eating it as the animal didn't have to suffer the very last moment?

The disillusion some posters here demonstrated against Halal meat on principles is ridiculous when the real suffering of none Halal variety is the same, except over a longer period of the animals life. I'm not saying Halal meat are all Free Range either. I just think people need to rethink their believe and not just bash things on superficial principles.

You either look at the whole picture and go Veggie or start shifting to better quality of life meat by paying more out of your pocket on EVERY meat you buy.

Recently a restaurant opened in our town centre, and I am pretty annoyed.

Its an "Indian Hal-al Buffet" and looks to have only recently opened.

Now, there are two things that really annoy me about this...

1) We have hardly any muslims let alone Indians in our town, so I cannot see where the demand is coming from..

2) I looked into the Halal foods, and I am quite frankly repulsed. How is a restaurant allowed to sell food from which the animals have been through so much suffering just for a silly religion? I thought we had vetinary standards in this country that had to be adhered to, so WHY do we have a restaurant that is selling food that has not been slaughtered to UK standards?

What steps can I take about this? Could I complain to the council? I presume they would have had to issue some sort of permit/restaurant licence for this premises?

Its quite upsetting that this has been allowed to happen, what can be done to ensure that these restaurants only use properly slaughtered meat to our standards, not some religion.
Whats so upsetting its important to understand what Halal actually is. Once you fully undesrtand what Halal meat is you will have a better idea. Here is a resource that can help explain more about Halal meat: https://www.halalincorp.co.uk/what-is-halal-meat/
