Half-life 1 or source version?

Seeing Half-Life 3 is confirmed for next year release and I yet to play these games

I think its best I should start now! Now my question what version? I would expect the Source version but reading the recent Steam reviews is putting me off.

I'd say play black mesa but while they are a bit underwhelming it is missing the last bit of the game which is still an integral part of the story. (Apparently they are releasing Xen worlds around the end of this year).

Yeah I should have said I just bought that last night and read its about 80% complete with the rest coming in December so I think I should just wait? Play that then Half Life 2? How long is Half Life 1 about?

Half Life 1 is a reasonably long game if you don't rush it a first time play through can span several days.

Play Black Mesa after, it's not complete so it'd be crazy to play it first.

Probably worth waiting for Black Mesa to get 100% finished, though if you are going to play Half Life now then definitely try the source version. Ideally, try both.
