Half Life 1 Vs Deus Ex

So I just bought Deus Ex on Steam and started playing for the first time!
One thing that really struck me was how it reminded me of the greatness that was playing HL1 back in '98/99.

They seemed similar, and obviously the Deus Ex crowbar is a hat-tipping to HL.
I did a google for Half Life Deus Ex and found an old forum thread from 2001!

Hard to say... Deus Ex has the more immersive and much deeper storyline, but the gameplay is much more fiddly, HL1 you can just jump in and start running and gunning.

I couldn't really call one as better - but I completed HL1 3 times and one of those was basically speed running whereas I've played through Deus Ex properly around 7 times in total from start to finish.
 
Another vote for deus ex, a true masterpiece. Though the mods for hl1 were immense and gave me thousands of hours of fun.

But since were judging just the single player then DEUS EX!

Pressing F5 every 5 seconds isn't an autosave? My arm reaches out almost automatically. You are a PC gamer, aren't you? :D

Shame that doesn't apply when mixing audio... Lost some good work that way... -_-

And my vote goes to Dues Ex. Half Life 1 was an amazing game, but I would never use the term MASTERPIECE for it. For Deus Ex, however, yes :P
 
Having played both on Steam recently I'd have to say that Deus Ex stands the test of time better. I probably enjoyed HL1 more when they first came out, but HL1 has since been eclipsed by lots of better FPS games (who were heavily influenced by HL1 obviously).

I don't think I've played any game like quite like DE since it came out, I guess BioShock has some similarities but I couldn't get into that. One thing that's nice with DE is that you can ramp the screen resolution right up, unlike the dumbed down DE2 which appears to be stuck at a horribly low 2nd gen console resolution.

HL1 bought us the epic community spawning, competition ruling, exam result altering Counter Strike (which in turn spawned CSS, so it loses points for that)

Still haven't got past the first mission of day ooos ex, I will do it one day!
 
Can't believe how fortunate I was to play Deus Ex, took back a horrendous purchase decision with Spec Ops II (honestely THE worst game I have ever played) and got DE... I couldn't believe what I had found...

But to make me decide between it and HL.. that's too hard.. both have awesomely compelling stories and gameplay delivered in slightly different ways.
