I have these games in my Steam library, I must have purchased numerous times over. I am trying to get an early version of Counterstrike 1.6 (with bots for single player as it wont used online) and Half Life 2 onto my XP rig.

This evening I found my original Half Life 2 disks (episode 1) and was about to install...

...only to read the instructions and realise it needs Steam online. God damn. Got the Orange box set as well.

Whilst I can run an install from Steam using my current PC. The current versions are different to those back in the day. Take for instance the original Half Life, the current Steam version has over the years changed - I simply prefer the original character models etc.

I normally buy original CD's or GOG installers for retro games, thus far it has being going well, apart from 2004+ Valve games so I am stumped!

Is there an idiots guide to be able to play early valve games offline and on XP?

Thanks @a1ex2001.

I was way over thinking things, I thought installing HL2 via disk could be actioned without Steam (nope). However its very easy to install (see post #6) if you own a copy on Steam. :)

I downloaded Half Life 2 on Steam to my current PC. Copied the full install to my XP machine and created a shortcut of the Hl2.exe. In the shortcut just add the recommended switch and then use the shortcut to launch.

First launch took a moment but once it had loaded and settled down, it runs perfectly (Fraps was stating 299 at 1600 x 1200). Its been years since I last played, it looks very good.

I remember the day I bought Half Life 2 along with a Sony Vaio S360 laptop, was living between places so a laptop which I could do the odd bit of gaming was the better option.

Surprisingly the Vaio ran HL2 okay when turning the details down a notch. I think that is why I was so surprised the other day when playing HL2 again! The last time I played properly must have on lowish detail. It looks good even now!
