Half-life 2 checkpoints taking 5 minutes to load

I've been wanting to complete Half-life 2 again. I can get in game within a few seconds, but every time there's a checkpoint (when "Loading..." appears on the screen) it takes literally 5 minutes to load which is completely ruining it for me.

My PC is defragged (if needed) every time my screensaver starts, so it's not that. I have also used the defragment cache files tool within Steam.

Is there maybe some kind of Half-life 2 cache I can clear or something?

Thanks,
Craig.

Would be interesting to find the answer because a friend of mine has the same problem.

Try defragmenting your files, both in Windows and using the defrag feature in Steam

Done that, see OP :)

I've sorted mine now, deleted everything in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\nykamp91\half-life 2\hl2" apart from SAVE - each checkpoint now loads within a few seconds.

i guess you could try turning Windows Defender off.

Also, download Defraggler and run a scan to see how fragmented your files are

All my drives are under 1% defragmented, every time the screensaver starts PerfectDisk defrags files if needed. Defender is also off.

Thanks for the suggestions and help everyone :)
