Half Life 2 Crashing After Loading Screen

This is the first time I've posted asking for help with a game crashing. Normally I trawl google till I find a fix, but this is baffling me...

I bought the Orange Box the weekend. Installed Steam, downloaded, updated, all that jazz. Had an error with the Miles audio codec, copying mss32.dll from system32 to game directory solved that

Half Life 2 crashes after I click 'New Game' and the black loading screen with Half Life 2 written on it disappears. Error message is 'hl2.exe has experienced an error yadda yadda yadda' - generic app crash error message.

The thing is, Lost Coast, Episodes 1 and 2, TF2...all play fine! No errors. My pc as in sig, ATI HD2900Pro. I have re downloaded the game, reinstalled, updated Catalyst to 8.6 from 8.1. My overclock is stable, 4 hour Prime and 1 hour Memtest86.

This is driving me up the walls. Any help is greatly appreciated!

as you have 4gb of ram in your sig, i assume you are running a 64bit version of windows. by default, steam will install a 64bit version of hl2 - this can be problematic so maybe try the 32bit version (assuming you're not already? :p). right click hl2 in the steam games windows, properties, "set launch options" and add this....

-32bit

Damn and blast, deleting clientregistry.blob didn't work.

Any other thoughts before I return this PoS to the store for a refund? This is infuriating (and just a little embarrassing!), HL2 works on my housemate's Dell which is basically a toaster with a monitor attached.

Try downloading and adding the Cinematic mod to HL2 and see if that works. If it does, then you get the added benefit of superior graphics too.

I'll try the Cinematic mod.

Lost Coast is now crashing whenever I enter a room in the village. Same room, every time, same error message as with HL2. I'm really stumped. I can run Gears of War, Bioshock, Half Life 1, everything except this! Argh.

How do you perform the uninstall? Perhaps you should uninstall and then manually delete any straggler files left over, if you don't already.

I am running 64bit Vista and HL2 has been ok for some time now, but all of a sudden over last weekend it just did not want to load. Crashing just during the load screen with the blurred background.

The -32bit worked, but I wasn't able to load my save games, luckily I was able to restart the level I was at.

I have reported the error to Steam, but will have to wait and see what they come back with.

Add your screen resolution to the startup option. -width xxxx -height xxxx (I think . . . ). Sometimes problems are caused by the game trying to resize on the fly and it hiccuping. Also update gfx drivers, or maybe downgrade a notch.

It's a known problem for the 64bit version. Same happened to me a few days ago when they brought the Left 4 Dead demo out. I've only noticed it on HL2 and Lost Coast, all the other episodes work fine. You can right click on half life 2/properties and type -32bit in the launch options but you might lose your saves :/

Hopefully they'll fix it soon.

I didn't even download the L4D demo. I have added the -32bit in the launch option and that worked, but lost all saved games. But like I said a few posts earlier; I was able to restart from the beginning of the level where I was in the game.

Thanks

ps. Message to Steam.... "Sort it out!"

Just got this problem today. It's a problem running half life 2 in 64bit mode steam know about it and are I hope fixing it. Somthing they added in a update causing this problem and for me at least is only affecting halflife 2. Like it was mentioned above I can get it running in 32bit mode. So you can either wait for the fix or play in 32 bit.

Ive had this problem since i updated my Nvidia card. The same issue everything works barring hl2. I did also also overclock my CPU (quad core 6600) so maybe its down to that. If so though why would having an overclocked CPU upset the game when all others work? I gave up on this problem which was sad as i was really enjoying my first playthrough of HL2. I know it was a bit late to jump on the band wagon anyway but its meant to be a classic so wanted to try it out.
