Half Life 2 error

Just installed Portal and Half-Life 2 on my new system, portal runs absolutley fine. No probs atall, but when I run HL2 thats another story...

It loads up the valve intro thing with the bald guy and the red target, it then goes to the screen with a part of the level out of focus and the loading... sign in the bottom right.

then i get suddenly pushed to desktop and get the following error.

Platform Error: module failed to initalize

and the title for the msgbox is "engine error" so im thinking its got something to do with Source but then again, portal is running perfectly.. ive tried reinstalling HL and verifying the files but still doesnt work.

did anyone else here ever get the same error?

The bald guy with the red target :D

That red target is a Valve ;)



Is your steam language set up for english in your steam settings/ interface
 
Its already set to english and I cant change any of the game settings, it goes to desktop before any of the options come up.

edit:
Ive just tried CSS and that works fine..
