I get the following in Half Life 2, only just started playing it using cats 7.6 with 2900XT.

I am sure i heard it is a problem with cats & half life 2 is that correct? Take a look at the link.

FOG

I think Valve fixed it on the 7.5s then when the 7.6s came out they broke it again :D . Update Steam and try with the 7.5s and report back

i thought this was an nvidia 8xxx + dx9 problem on hl2/css or is that just a css one?

try putting -dxlevel 81 in launch options, fixes the problem on css with 8xxx series cards

Wow that fixed it adding the -dxlevel 81 switch fixed it!!

I am running DirectX 9C June version that came out just a couple of weeks back.

TomNBK what DX you running?

Big thanks to MrBios!

Seems rubbish though that the 2900XT still having endless problems :/

Are there any big disadvantages in running it in DirectX 8.1?

No it was a Valve issue all along, they wouldn't fix it for Nvidia, Nvdia had to fix it for themselves so it took em about 6 months, where as Valve and ATi are bucking each other, so when the 2900 came out Valve fixed it for them straight away. :)

only disadvantage is you dont get the dx9 graphical effects, so no big loss really lol, theres 2 different directx9 setting on source though -dxlevel 90 and -dxlevel 95 so you might want to give both of those a try and see if either of them works

Neither of them made a difference. Only the 8.1 switch works.

Is this a problem for ATI to fix for 7.7 or MS to sort out in DirectX?

Possibly ATi as Valve were the ones who fixed the fog issue via an update through Steam, but now ATi have somehow broken it again in their 7.6's, so be up to them this time. :p

The fog problem is fixed in HL2 episode 1, CCS, DODS but for some reason valve have not updated HL2 and so the fog still remains, this is with the 7.6 drivers and fully up to date steam.

most counterstrike source levels is fixed with 7.6, but iv noticed that insurgency mod for HL2 has the problem, so HL2 must have the fog now, but yet again, Garrys Mod10 works fine. so some source engine games work fine andsome are still a bit too foggy :)
