Probably a stupid question , but i'll ask it anyway.

Just finished Far Cry ( Yes , i'm that up to date ! ) , and looking for a new challenge.
Half-Life 2: Game of the Year Edition - has caught my eye , but all the Steam Account , CS Source and Expansion packs has somewhat confused me.

So the question is , Can i simply just buy this game , install and play like any other , or do i need a previous version aswell.

And what is a Steam Account ?

Please enlighten me.

Cheers,

Mark

Basically, you buy HL2 and when you install it you'll be prompted to install 'Steam'. Steam is Valves server browser but it also stops people from using the same serial key over. So once you register your serial key to your Steam account it cannot be used with another. DaveyD's Steam FAQ will explain it a lot better.

If you buy HL2 then you will have all that you need. :)

If you enjoy that then try Episode 1(downloaded for £12) aswell. It's short but the audio commentary and replay value made up for it. Thankfully Episode 2 is going to be longer :)

Worth getting HL2 etc over steam :) saves buying another CD only to get scratched later on in life

Should all be covered in the SteamFAQ, but you'll be getting *most* of the stuff in the game of the year box, except Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life 2: Episode One.

If you're not to bothered about paying a little extra via Steam, you'll be able to get the Source Premier Pack for ~£38, about £18 more than a retail version of Half-Life 2: GOTY, but you'll get extra:
Day of Defeat: Source (~£10)
Half-Life 2: Episode One (~£15)
So you'll be saving money in that way.

I got Silver pack over steam....

Thought how much of a waste it was at the time... totally wrong was I!

DO IT

Well, Silver pack hasn't been available for a long time now, but the equivalent Valve Complete pack is a little more money, and probably not worth it now, the Source Premier pack would be sufficient, unless wanting to play old Half-Life 1 games.

Saying that, it's about £50 for the full pack, and you do get quite a bit for your money.
