On the wagon, sorta
A while back there was supposed to be plans to release an update for HL2 to update the visuals to the standerd of episode 1 and 2, did anything come of this?

your either thinking of the addition of HDR, or the source engin 2007

HDR wasnt in HL2, was demoed in Lost Coast, and then was in Ep1 and Ep2, new CS maps, and other games

The new source engin, as afar as I know, is only used by TF2

So as for an official all out graphics update, no.

The new source engine (or at least the updated visuals it provides) is only used by Portal, Garrys Mod and TF2.

HL2 used stock Source engine.

HL2 EP1 was capable of using upgraded Source engine which has HDR.

HL2 EP2, Portal and TF2 are able to use the further upgraded Source engine, which now has HDR, Motion blur and dynamic shadows when using the torch.

Apparently multi-core optimisation was supposed to be added somewhere along the line, but I don't know what has come of that.

HDR was in the original source engine, just not included in any of the maps that make up HL2. There was no new engine for Lost Coast. HDR also appeared in DOD:S around the same time, and more HDR maps for CS:S came out in 2005.

Check your C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\. There's only one "source engine.gcf" and some "source 2007 materials/sounds.gcf"

The only upgrade I can think of that OP could be refering to is the cinematic mod.

Lots of confusion in this thread. The OP is wondering if the improvements to HL2 seen in Episode 2 will come to the original Half Life 2 as well as Episode 1.

If you look at Episode 2, there are better particle effects (for example, blood splatters and fires), dynamic lighting, more reactive AI and so on. The Xbox 360 version sports these improvements on Half Life 2, but the PC version has yet to see these updates.

Yes there was rumors of this, basicly so HL2 looked and felt the same as the episode 2 did, shiny and more reactive.
