Disclaimer: I do OWN this game. I am not asking for any help regarding a PIRATE copy. I am asking for help with my LEGITIMATE game that I paid £30 for.

I also apologise in advance to any Dons if this isn't allowed, however it's not any more illegal than gold-sharing in WoW, which nobody seems to bother locking (i.e it breaks the ToS but not the law).

With that out of the way, i'd like to ask if anyone's had any luck installing HL2 without Steam, and if anyone can offer any tips for doing so. :)

Thanks in advance.

Yes. Have a google.

I have, however i'm wary of what I install when it comes to these kind of things. I just wondered if anyone has anything they can recommend. :)

Why would you want?

That question I could answer, although it would take me a while while I went through all the reasons :p

Plus I think i've outlined a few in the other thread that popped up about Steam recently.

But the main 100% reason is that i'm just about to install HL2 and I don't want to have to trawl through all the damn updates just to play. :)

Well I can promise you it's possible but I don't know how far I can go towards telling you without breaking the rules. Bit torrents aren't, as far as I'm aware, illegal when used to acquire freeware hence that will be no good to you. But I'm sure there are ways.

So why not set it so it doesn't download any updates  that would be easier than some dodgy bypass software crack surely.

I'd like to know this too. I want to play Half Life 2 offline, but for some reaon Steam won't let me. Even though I've follwed all the instructions to a tee I'm still forced to be connected to the interweb to play an offline only game.

You'd think that considering I brought HL2 from an actual shop on the day of release that'd I'd have it sorted by no! No, Steam somehow has it in for me!

I tell it not to download updates. So it ******* GOES AND DOES IT ANYWAY.

So I think "Well it can't in offline mode" - but guess what? IT INSISTS ON ******* UPDATING BEFORE I CAN USE IT OFFLINE.

Sod this crap. HL2 isn't worth it.

Don't throw a tantrum, it's updating because it needs to updates to be playable, setting it to do not keep this game up to date only stops it downloading the patches on its own, whereas offline mode will only work if your games are up to date.

Just update the game and stop getting so frustrated at nothing.

No it doesn't! All my games are up to date and I can't play the damn thing off-line!
Always worked for me, tried deleting the legendary clientregistry.blob?
