Half Life 2 not running as well as it should?

I seem to be getting stuttery gameplay at any resolution, it just does not look smooth.

Specs:

AMD A64 3000+
2GB RAM
ATI x1950 PRO 512MB

Happens at all resolutions.

Am using latest video, audio and chipset drivers.

Any ideas?

Installed via steam (Clean install) so should be most upto date?

The -heapsize switch on launch appears to have helped.

Set to -heapsize 10240000 has have 2GB Ram.

Will keep updated.

Am I meant to get little boxes saying "Loading" when I go into a new part through a door for example as this happened a couple of times last night?

I remember years ago on hl2 launch a few people having problems.

Wasnt it down to sound caching? And there was scripts to load every sound into memory before playing. check steampowered.com forum, it may be listed under lost coast
