There is the point where apparently u have to shut down something from inside this mansion type building. There is some kind of artillery being used against u.

I cant work out what to do next, there is a blue forcefield across the gates of the "mansion"; and the main baddie is talking in the background.

Reason Im playing half-life 2 is because I found hitman: blood money fun, and remember I never finished half -life 2. I didnt have any save game so Ive got here from scratch, playing on normal difficulty.

iirc you need to leave your building (opposite) and head all the way to the right side of the building. Take cover as needed.should be a way through over there somewhere.

If it's the bit I'm thinking about then go over to the right hand side of the mansion with the blue forcefield and use the grav gun to pull out the power lead...continue.

No wonder you were stuggling! :D
Im assuming this is meant to be patronising  , but really its difficult to check every piece of scienery when ** playing leapfrog with artillery; and puzzle games arent my thing anyhow.

Its quite surprising with the right layout the designer can completely make u go looking in all the wrong places. There is one door which u enter which has three passages that u explore in turn, but it is the mound of rubble to the left as u come in that is obsured by the doorframe that u have to climb.
