Basically I'm humming and harring about buying HL: Source over steam for a whole $9.99.

Having seen the screenshot, the game doesn't look that different. Not what I'd call as nice as HL2's graphics, but not overdone.

So, I leave it to you chaps and chapesses: Yay, or nay? ;)

NO - this is NOT worth it. Basically it has source, but thats as close as it gets to HL2. The water looks better.. but its the only thing that looks better. It uses exactly the same textures with everything and I promise you you'll be disapointed.

You maybe interessted in this http://www.blackmesasource.com/

Basically it's HL1 but totally remade from scratch by all of the 3rd party source modders on the scene today. This will blow HL:S out of the water

Definitely don't bother with Half-Life: Source. It was never really intended to be much more than a test project for valve. Black Mesa Source, on the other hand, looks like it'll be stunning

If you've not played through Half-Life before, it's probably a worthwhile purchase, there really isn't a massive amount of difference however from Half-Life to Half-Life: Source. The whole thing is a more of a proof of how old Half-Life engine based games and mods could easily be converted into the Source engine.

The main differences I've found after playing through it are:

  • Couple of improved sound effects from what I remember
  • Basic physics in game. This is just for player models, so soldiers, scientists and all that, but no barrels or other stuff.
  • Pretty water effects and reflections.
  • Some better explosion particle effects, so grenades go off like Half-Life 2 grenades visually.
  • Some backgrounds have been made 3D. Most notably the level on the cliff face, the entire canyon is modelled using the Half-Life 2 scaling thing.
That's about what I remember.

If you've got £8 to spare/burn/waste, then go for it, as long as you know what you're getting.

As long as Black Mesa: Source continues as it is, and ends up being released this year, it should be worth the wait.

I think I might give HL: Source ago. I'd like to see Half-Life enhanced, albeit slightly.

BlackMesa looks jaw-dropping. But, IIRC, I saw it just before HL2 was released. Or maybe shortly after. Saying that, they've done a lot of work since last saw their website.

I have played HL1 before - I could probably play it backwards, and with my eyes shut, TBH. ;):o

If you buy almost any steam package then you will get half life source free.

But no, its not worth paying for at all, to the user half life and half life source are identical, sure it uses the new engine, but its exactly the same to play.

Half life 2: Aftermath anyone? :p

I dont think you can buy it individually and if you could it aint worth it, it looks almost the same as the old version but with a few updated bits. As said above just wait for Black Mesa Source coz it looks the ******

You can buy any game on Steam individually now, though a lot of them come with a high price tag for what you get.
