Halfords service - any good?

Gents (and ladies),
I do more miles now and am on course for 20k this year (10k so far after 6 months) so figured I should get an interim service done. Don't want to pay Ford £130-odd for it especially (despite a part of me wanting to keep a full book of dealer stamps) so wondered if Halfords services are worth having.
(Don't have the time or the knowledge to do it myself, having looked at what they check so that's a no go).
Thoughts? suck it up and take it to ford, take it to Halfords and get what you pay for - could go both ways, or take it somewhere else entirely (a decent independent)

Depends on the individual staff.
Interim service should be easy.

Personally I would use a small independent garage as I know somebody I trust.

I prefer to talk to the person doing the work. If the place is a mess or they don't come across well I find somewhere else.

Price won't necessarily tell you if they are any good or not.

As for taking it to Halfords it was (would have been) a money saving exercise but if the service I get from them isn't worth the convenience then I'll take it to Ford or the independent I've used before and pay the extra £60-70.
 
Ask yourself this, if buying a used Ford and you had a choice of two,one with a full Ford history and one serviced at Halfords, which would be your preference to buy?
 
Fair point and I agree - I wouldn't be so keen on the latter.
I wonder though how much effect an extra Ford stamp would have on the value of a 13 year old focus.
 
13 year old focus, I'd personally just take it to halfords or an indie...

All that's really going to be done is a oil and oil filter change and a quick look round the car, I can't see how that can go wrong..

It's Halfords, literally anything could go wrong.
 
I always go indie.

Main dealer you just paying for the stamp, still could be some 18 year old doing the service, with an indie most of the time their ex main dealer mechanics with years of experience and they treat you better.
 
We have 2 Octavia Black Editions and 2 C220d Estates on lease, we got the maintenance included, all 4 go to Halfords, never had any problems and they always get valet.

Neither would I as it always goes to BMW, the cars 10 years old and drives like new, id like to think its because I take it to BMW and the extra cost is paying off in longevity.

We have no choice with the lease cars as the lease company chooses where we send them, however we have never had any issues with services and tyres.

I guess it all depends on the skill levels of staff at each branch, maybe we are lucky with ours.
 
I used to use a local independant to get most of my cars serviced - however he has put his prices up, and dealer prices seem to have become more reasonable.

E.g. paid ~£220 for full service and MOT of a Ford Fiesta at independant ~ 18 months ago, Ford Motorcraft Major service would be £195 and MOT via Ford for £30, and with Motorcraft you get 12 months "free" UK and European breakdown cover.

Bloke at work got his Vauxhall Astra serviced and MOT'd yesterday - came in telling me he had got a good deal etc - turned out he paid £175 (and was only a minor service). Looking to get my Zafira serviced - Vauxhall offer fixed price minor service of £149 - again including 12 months "free" breakdown cover.

No brainer really these days.
 
I should mention that the £45 service did not include all the things he actually had to do :p...

The service, M.O.T, and a few problems cost me £500 yesterday.
 
I've used Halfords loads on my Mondeo. I like the simplicity of just booking them for a Saturday morning. With top cashback and whatever offers the price is usually fine.

I've personally never had any problems. It's a service. It's nothing special.

Done 60k miles in cars serviced there.
