I just phoned up the Halifax bank about opening a bank account.

And they just told me yeah yeah thats fine, took a few details then said, also its £100 to open it too, for card, cheque book etc..

Can someone confirm?

What type of account was it? Sounds like some high interest saver or something like that.
/Edit: Oh well thats a bit odd, im sure if you actually went into their branch you would only need a penny or so to open it. But i've never opened a bank account with less than a few hundred anyway, because that was the sole reason i needed a bank, to store money!

it's only £100 to activate it. You just pay it into your account and that's it. You can take it out again if you wish. I had to do this with my current account a few months ago when I opened it with Halifax

I've been with the Halifax for 20 years now ... and hated every minute. Been meaning to close the account for years. Horrible service, poor customer relations, and ... oh the list goes on.

Anyway, going to be joining the abbey shortly so up yours halifax :D

Really? I've been pretty impressed with them. Their internet banking is great imo. But that is coming from Nationwide, who are possibly the worst bank in the world.

Alliance and Leicester for the win tbh, I moved from the halifax last year as the charged me over £220 for being overdrawn by £2 with no letter the tell me that i was over drawn. A&L are cool and you dont need to have any money to open an account.

There have been an increasing number of lawsuits over that kind of thing and banks have been settling rather than risk losing. Also, enquiries into bank overcharging have been generating some very negative conclusions about banks.

Charges are supposed to "reflect" costs, and are not supposed to be grossly overstated. If they are, it's very likely breach of contract under the Unfair Contract Terms Act (1977 I think) and you could well be entitled to a refund of most of that .... AND damages.

If I were you, I'd write a polite but very firmly worded letter of complaint to the bank about that and, if you get nowhere, get some legal advice. Oh, and the charges can be over a period of up to about 6 years, that being the limit on suing over civil matters in England and Wales (but it may be different in Scotland).

Halifax I have found to be very good over the last 18 years I have been with them (from my Little Xtra Club days).

In regards to the overdraft charges I recieved a letter just last week stating they have completely changed the way they calculate the charges (in a good way).
