Halo 1 PC crash problem

Playing Halo 1 through at the moment (don't laugh) on PC. It was fine until level 5 - Assault on the Control Room. Right at the start of that level, you get dropped off on a platform, and as soon as you walk up to the first door (after killing the first wave of enemies) the game freezes. Sometimes I can get it to carry on by alt-tabbing out and back in a few times, but then one of the pixel shader effects has gone completely wrong (I assume this is what is causing the freeze) and instead of a cool looking black marble surface, just random noise is shown. The effect is used extensively in that level and subsequent levels so I don't want to play on with it looking wrong and maybe freezing again.

I've tried changing nvidia drivers, and reinstalling the game several times, and I've tried every patch version from 1.0 to 1.7. I even tried installing the game under my Vista boot, but had the same problem there too.

Just wondering if anyone else with Halo PC could start a game on this level and see if they get the crash. It should only take 2 minutes to test. If you do please post video card model and driver version. It's probably an issue that's come up quite recently, either introduced by a DirectX update or new video card drivers. I could swap out my 8800 for an X1800 for a week just to finish the game if it turns out to be an nvidia only problem.

Cheers :)

Hi mate. I have played and completed the PC version of Halo 1 many times. I have never had the problem you describe, sorry :(

I would suggest forcing the game to use a lower shader model, which you can do via the command line. If you google it you should be able to find the exact command. If it still freezes regardless of shader version, I suggest trying a different graphics card.

:)

Cheers :) I think it might have been introduced recently, because I've also played it all the way through without the problem about a year ago. Maybe it's just an 8800 gts problem or something to do with recent nvidia drivers - can't be many people playing Halo single player any more to find the problem.

I'll try the shader command line options though, thanks.

I know this is off-topic (sorry)

but can you use AA in this game? I seem to remember there was a problem with activating it ...

Cheers
Andy

There isnt any option ingame. Years ago if you tried to force it via the driver options you couldnt read the text in game.
