Played it through loads, liked it, sold it.

Only thing stopping me buying it again is the fact that when NGE arrived (woo!) it was had bad loading times when installed to disk.

Has this changed? Is it noticeable?

Halo 3 suffers from an install as it was already designed to utilise the hard drive if you had one, copying some content across to it when you play the game. If you install to the hard drive the game still copies the same content across to the hard drive (I assume in essence, reading and writing from the drive at the same time during load screens) which is slower than just from the game disc.

agreed with the above from what I've read, the load times of new maps are the issue, especially when playing online multiplayer... and this forces the other player to wait for your machine to catch up.

No it never will improve because it loads frequently used data (such as MP maps etc) into the hard drives cache and also loads data from the disc simultaneously making the game load more quickly. But when you install it to the hard drive it only loads from one sourse instead of both.

It makes very little difference when loading maps on multi player....barely seconds (tested it myself).....it can take quite a bit longer on single player to load campaign levels but IMO its worth installing to the HD.

Funnily enough, I finally unwrapped the Halo 3 I got as a XMas pressie, to replace my original I sold last year..

I read about the possible slow down by installing to HDD, but decided to do it anyway, and actually loading times seem very very good indeed, it may be slower then from disk, I haven't compared, but if you are never left 'waiting' I'd say it's worth installing to the HDD!

I timed it like a geek on MP its maybe 3-6 seconds longer depending on the maps. On single player its a fair bit longer (havent timed that) but nothing worth not install for a quite xbox.

I'm sure 1 person out of 8 you'll play with online has installed to the HD so everyone has to wait anyway.

Even with the comments above, I think I'll stick with playing the game from the disk... don't really fancy being the one who holds others up really :)

I think i'll install this when i finally open it, i cant stand the buzz saw noise and now its not so cold i think the extra heat isnt a good idea for my unit!

TBH MP load times are always the same for me. The % of people that install to disk are too high to get away from and we are talking around 3-6 seconds here. You wont be holding up others.

just me being a stubborn mule i guess ;)
