Here's what happened I wonder if you can help

1: I changed the CPU fan (on mobo header) from a thermaltake (noisy) to a quiet akasa
2: Booted up fine, went into bios
3: Had lunch, baguette and omelette, mmmm
4: Came back and PC was switched OFF for some reason
5: I press power button, everything comes on but no signal is sent to monitor
6: Repeated 5 many times with explitives...!
7: Took CMOS battery out n' in again and still no diff

The two fans on the mobo fan headers come on.
The HD is heard to be spinning
The GPU fan is spinning
The case speaker is no longer beeping and the HD activity light is no longer lit.
Took RAM out and no beeping...

Whhaaat is going on here I am at a loss:

P5NE-SLI 775
E6300
2GB Geil PC6400
ATI 4350 1GB PCI-E
Edimax wireless card
POS 'COLORSIT' '480W' PSU (I know I know but this rig plays freecell)

Reflux suggested putting my GTX280 in there to see if its the GPU that spontaneously died, but I fear that the POS PSU might not be able to power it and am scared of frying stuff.

This mobo is a sensitive piece of crap that sometimes plays hide and seek then will start working again, but this has me stumped.

Maybe I static-fried the GPU? I felt no 'zap' though. However was wearing a jumper that makes a lot of static lol. BUT case was plugged in via kettle cord and should be earthed? This is what I normally do with no problems

Cheers:)

Oh yeh I should have said I have tried the GPU in the lower PCI-E slot to no avail.

You think the PSU is the problem? despite everything powering on seemingly ok?

rigs are 76 miles apart atm, will be home in two wks.
Mainly scared a crappy powersupply could harm my GTX...

sorry misread you, I suppose that is an idea, just to see if I get any picture on my system which I know works...

yeh it's a pretty awful mobo isn't it. I'll tell my mum re: ram see if it helps it to POST, I guess I would have brushed against it when installing the fan...

will try reset button too

PSU is specs in first post Chrisavz, not my sig stuff...
even so I doubt its drawing much more than 200watts even a carrp PSU should be able to handle that, I hope..seems to be:)

Thanks weird dave

Hodders (called my old hamster hodder lol) I would think it unlikely the CPU overheated as the heatsink is a lapped scythe ninja, and the E6300 is lapped too. The chip has been at over 3ghz for couple of years with no problems. Even without a fan the ninja could run the chip passively, indeed it allowed my Q6700 to reach 3.7ghz at a load temp of 72 degrees, my new megahalems reducing that figure by ten degrees...

you misunderstand, the heatsink was already on and was working fine, all I did was literally change the CPU fan on the header and the mobo will no longer POST!

new fan would have drawn less current I would have thought, just an akasa smoke, pretty tame, no delta

in terms of power this pc is really simple, one HD and one Optical I think on different harnesses it's hard to see. either way everything is powering on, I think the PSU is working as normal, unless say the mobo four pin stopped working spontaneously.

I'm begining to think the mobo, CPU or GPU is borked, I'll be able to test the graphics card in my rig in just over a weeks time, but if it's fine then I'll really be stuck!
