So, I'm in the process of making my gf's mum not buy a HP Touchsmart PC for around £1000...

Instead I said I'd build her something from scratch from Overclockers :p

It needs everything. Preferably a wireless keyboard and mouse. She doesn't play many games so don't need a beast graphics card.

Wasn't sure on how much to spend, so thought I'd ask for ideas

Not sure on monitor, I assume it will be used for web and a few photos:

You can change the case if you want. But I chose it because it's very sleek looking and may help your GF's mum realise what quality she can expect for her money.

For the monitor, you get her THIS.

You'd probably be still looking at around £800. She still can get the touch screen interface with about £200 cheaper, and most of all it's you who enjoyed building it.

R088ieS86: She'll be playing indie type games or games like Portal.

Lelouch: That monitor actually looks quite good, I shall take a look at some videos of it in action! She's currently stuck with a crappy little 15" CRT monitor, so I think a good monitor will be nice.

lclcr: She doesn't like using OS X

top end spec:

graphics that will eat most games, 120GB solid state drive, wireless keyboard + mouse from logitech, blu ray drive, and a big processor

lower end spec:
if that is too much to spend (or too much computer for your liking), something like this will be better:

If it was my outlaw, possible future inlaw ;) I would probably go with something similar to Reapers first spec albeit with some alterations.

If they have a LCD tv you could run the rig through that. Obviously you don't need the monitor and I don't think a SSD would be necessary. Add a DTV card and they have a media centre to record and pause tv as well as watch bluray movies and DVDs or on demand internet tv.

By losing the monitor and SSD and a bit of fudging with the spec im sure there is enough money left from the £1000 budget to fit in a cheap laptop so they can browse the internet etc if the tv is in use or facebook in the garden now summer is a coming.....Just a thought to run past them. (if you're clever and setup the machines properly on the network the laptop will be able to access the recorded TV programs too)

As you can see for that kinda money you can do a lot better than the touchsmart with is only so expensive because of the "gimmick" touch screen.

Good luck with the build fella.

Oh top tip, you can make the 955 a 965 by upping the multiplier by 1 in the bios. If you plan on doing gaming a quadcore makes sense over an i3. Although with a grand you could easily get an i5 build. I'll leave it with you to decide the best way forward.

I just don't want her with a super powerful PC, which she wont even use 50% of. Something with lots of utility and not necessarily power, if you know what I mean.

Reapers top spec looks like a winner +/- a few adjustments! thanks
