Hammer on SDS doesn't work?

I've just bought a DeWalt D25033K SDS Plus drill. I'm not 100% sure if it's broken or whether I'm doing something stupid but the hammer action doesn't appear to work (or at least consistently?). This is my first SDS Plus drill so I'm not too familiar with what is normal and what isn't.

In hammer mode with a chisel bit in, you can see the end of the chuck moving in and out before touching the chisel to anything, but as soon as you put any kind of pressure on it, that in-out movement stops and you can just hear the motor spinning. In drill/hammer mode I *think* it does the same thing but I have just drilled a hole through a double skin brick wall and it was like a knife through hot butter! Likewise with a few smaller holes for rawl plugs. It's possible that it's because I'm using brand new masonry bits I guess but wanted to get your guys opinions on this?

It claims to be a 3 function hammer drill with a stop so providing you set it to hammer mode when using a chisel it should do the job.

I've got a cordess and mains dewalt sds and it doesn't really kick in until your putting some pressure on it then its starts to hammer...

so if chasing plaster for example it wont kick in full force unless you press hard or until you hit the brick underneath

So for example you can test this, you should be able to hold its gently against plaster and it will just sit there making a bit of noise but not hammering, then press harder and it should start to hammer.... if not maybe get it replaced or speak to support

Second this. The hammer action is not noticeable at all until you apply some pressure to it.

Thanks guys.

I've just been out with some old broken slabs to test, drill with no hammer is as expected. Drill with hammer definitely works and hammer alone still didn't until I gave the bit a knock on the slab then applying a good amount of pressure and it started working.

As you all describe, seems you do need a fair bit of pressure for it to hammer now it's working.
