Right, been trying (admittedly not very hard and not for very long) to rip some DVDs to my iPod. When i started i use 2 programmes, one was simply called DVDDecrypter (source unknown, this was about a year ago?) and the other was the much acclaimed Handbrake. Simply put using neither have i managed to get a DVD from the disc onto my iPod :( i did manage with one of the two to get a movie into iTunes (which is not easy as itunes seems to want to be as unhelpful as possible most of the time) I think it was the dvddecrypter one but im not sure. I also dont know why it wont copy to the ipod as itunes "doesn’t do" error messages.

So at some point between now and then i tried again. i managed to get 3 movies onto the desktop as .VOB files (again, not sure which programme) which work perfectly except, when you can see the mouth of someone who is talking, their voice is silenced (this however i think is the way my speakers turn it to surround sound as when i bypass the converter its fine and also when i select the 2.0 audio track on VLC media player then the sound returns)

I tried just now putting one of these through handbrake with the "ipod" output selected. The given file is an m4a file that absolutely nothing can read.... :( wont import to itunes (again no error messages, just pretends i didn’t ask it to do anything),l vlc will open it but not play it, windows media player says it doesnt have the right codec and quick time says its an un-supported file format.

All i want to do is give the programme a media file, click a button (i will press a few if necessary) and for it to give me something i can drag onto my ipod.... can anyone in the magical land of ocuk give me ANY advice at all?

Thankyou to those of you who havew read this far! have an e-cookie ;)

I ahve been strugggling to create avi's from my dvd's and my only limited success has been with one recent dvd.

I used decryptor to create the vob files in a folder then I told handbrake that folder was the source, gave it an output name and voila mp4 goodness.

I have had zero success with most movies though. And I find myself in your same boat!

Are you sure you're using the right ipod preset for your model of ipod? Try experimenting with the others. I use the "iPhone and iPod Touch" preset almost daily, it produces .m4v files, iTunes and my iPod Touch have no problem recognising them.

hmm not sure but i use nero reencode. it just makes a mp4 file that can get read on my ipod and my psp player.

just to let you know this borders on the illegality of copywrite....

just to let you know. i have made lots of movies so far.

What kind of iPod is it? For the newer ones, the iPhone and iPod Touch preset in Handbrake works fine.

Handbrake can't rip most commercial DVDs on its own, though - the source video has to be unencrypted. You have the right idea with using DVD Decrypter as well, but I'm not sure we're allowed to talk about that here as it's circumventing copy protection :(
