Hiya Guys,

I've been using HandBrake for some time! Really like it, and I've ripped many of my movies using it.

Now I dunno what I cane across to make me panic but, I just used the default settings?

Which is MP4-AAC, and not H.264-AAC?

H.264 takes much longer then just using MP4, but have I done all my ripping wrong?

I mean, they look great, but isnt H.264 much better? I cant believe I've ripped my movies now knowing using the H.264 would have made them even better?

I'm running a test right now with a small episode, ripped it using mp4, and now h.264 to see the difference.

What do you guys think?

Thanks.

Second post, didnt see these new forums, still posted in Opensource.

H.264 will give you much better quality at the same bitrate. E.g. a 700MB movie will look better with H.264 @ 1000Kbps than a regular mp4 @ 1000kbps. You could drop the bitrate with h.264 and get similar quality to regular mp4 but at a lower bitrate (and obviously a smaller file size).

Regular mp4 with 2 pass selected will look pretty good, 1 pass mp4, in my opinion is too blocky especially for anything with a lot of motion.
h.264 will take a lot lot longer than mp4 (20fps Vs 80fps) on my MacBook but that is really the only downside to it.

If you're happy with the quality of your mp4 rips and you've got a lot of content to compress then stick with it.

is it worth doing 2 passes with H.264? i have been on dvd's but am i effectively just doubling the encoding time for little gain?
