I'm keen on format shifting my old VHS and DVDs onto MP4. So, with the help of Handbrake and VLC I managed to move....two.

Handbrake seems to be finnicky as hell about scanning the discs, mostly not working at all and then suddenly deciding it's OK. At 30 mins a time my evening is going up in smoke.

I'm getting timeout errors disc and/or that the scan was unable to find any files on the disc. WTH ?

(also AMD Catalyst no longer has an encoding ability ? When did they take that away ? The driver is still there, but no options in the CCC ?)

What am I doing wrong ?

Sounds like it could be your DVD drive causing the problem. Use a program to rip the DVDs to the harddrive, then work on the files from the harddrive.

Yup, get them onto the hard drive first, then use handbrake, it's not designed for scanning discs. They just leave that feature in for people who are mounting protection free ISO files to their drives.

Quick Update. That worked, I managed to successful shift 3 out of four DVDs. Don't know what happened to the other one, looks like it just stopped 2/3 of the way through. It was a long movie, but the resulting part file is still smaller than the three which did manage to complete.

I suspected something like that. I'll have another go tonight.
Now all I need is a small home server !
