It might be a daft question but are there any cases available with the M/B bolted to left hand side with a window on the right hand side?

It's just that there is no way of orientating my gear so that I could show off the guts of the thing with the window on the left. :(

Has anyone ever tested the difference a window makes to the noise levels you can hear from a few feet away? I would forsake my window if it made the pc quieter.

It depends on the case - If it's full of holes for fans then a window will make no differance.

If like mine (Lian Li PC-S80) or the Antec P180/183 that have been designed for quiet systems
(in direct sound paths and multilayer construction) adding a window would make it louder.

If it's a cheap case. made with thin metal/plastic panels - a 3mm window may reduce noise

How the window is joined to the case will also make a differance - add vibration noise vs seal in air born noise

As a rule a window can't absorb much sound energy (just deflect it) - so a quality panel is always better
