So after being accepted for a place at university which starts next month, I now need to quit my job. I currently work at Waitrose and I'm pretty sure there is a 2 week notice period but not having resigned from a job before I'm not quite sure what to write! Any pointers?

I've also got 5 days of holiday that I am yet to take, am I correct in thinking I will be paid for this?

Speaking to HR is the best advice. Just be honest and direct. Explain why you want to go, when you can work your last shift and mention your holiday. :)

Depends how long you have been working there I think on the holiday pay part but otherwise you just put something like this:

"Dear Sir/Madam:

I hereby hand in my formal notice to end my employment. My two weeks notice starts <insert date here>

Yours sincerly

<insert name here>"

^ That is all you need to put. I personally couldn't do that (:o) and would feel the need to explain why i was leaving. In your case, this would be University. :)

"Dear *****,

I hereby hand in my formal notice to end my employment. My two weeks notice starts <insert turd here>

****ety-bye,

Mr Awesome"

Or you could just speak to HR. Up to you.

There is no need to say why you are going. Its none of their business. The example letter by James J is perfect and is all you need! No need to elaborate!

Be nice about it, you may need this network if you cant get an immediate job after Uni, they much prefer hiring people they "know" and "can do the job";)

Thanks! I'll probably use this then.
