This is becoming a bit of a broken record for me so apologies for that.

Got the replacement handlebar yesterday and plan to sort it at the weekend but have just had a brainfart moment. Looking at guides on replacing the grips, a lot of them say to cut it off and replace with new but is there a chance that the existing ones can be kept?

Also, any suggestions on removing the grips and applying them on the new bars, grease/glue-wise?

Cheers in advance!

To get the old ones off, use a can of WD40 with the straw nozzle. Push it up between the bar and grip as far as possible and spray some in. Do this along as much of the grip as possible and it should come off fairly easily!

To fit new grips the best thing ive found is hair spray so go rob your mrs dresser table. Its liquid enough to spray on and then slide the grip on before drying out and sticking.
when you slide it on, cover the hole on the end and the vacuum will force air out the sides and makes it fit no probs! Just leave it now to dry.

Lockwire the grips if you can

i cut my old one off,the new one was a right pig to slide on,you can buy a cheap pack of grip glue to stop it twisting/moving ect

try twisting the old one off and squirt some washing up liquid inbetween

I changed my grips last night, dead easy and no need to cut anything off.
Remove bar ends, slide a thin screwdriver between grip and bar and roll it around the bar a bit. In my case the old grip just slid right off after that.

Clean the bars, spray with hairspray, slide grip on and leave overnight. Mine was perfect this morning.

Hairsprays a really nifty idea. What's the advantages of changing grips? Are all grips universal or do they need to be made for the bike model?

Sorry to barge in.

I bought these mainly because the ones I had fitted were disgusting (the previous owner had fitted some ugly FZ6 branded things which I hated)

New ones are softer so a bit more comfortable.

Different compounds, some prefer soft sticky grips and some like them tougher. Mine are soft progrips.
Yep, and I ripped this guy off to, as the ProGrips looks nice without the cheese and are nice and soft... great and for £12 notes, I think great value.

Got this sorted at the weekend - thanks for your tips and help!

However....

As one bar weight fell of and the other couldn't be removed from the old handlebars, I am now looking for decent (note 'cheap but not tat') handlebar weights. I was quoted £57 for a pair of stock ones, sod that!

I understand that some bikes require it to be a specific weight so could you fellas lead me in the right direction for a good set.

Cheers!

I have found a pair on ebay but not 100% sure if they included the rubber stopper inside the bar.

As I do a lot of motorway riding, I've noticed an increase in bar vibration without the weights so it would be nice to slightly eleminate that!

Nice tip about the Threadlock.

I asked the seller about the bar end contents and the reply was "The kit comes with the metal part, the black end cap and the bolt. The internals doesn't come with the kit."

Bit of a gyp really...

Item in question is this: R&G Racing Bar End

Hmmm ok seems there might be some confusion, I forget that some bikes already have either solid bars with thread drilled into them, in that instance you just screw the new bar end in, on others the handlebar is hollow and a rubber inner with a nut inside that basically just expands when you screw the bolt in holding the bar end in place.
What type is your handlebar? can you look down into the handlebar and see if the mount is inside still?
