hang time

Hey Guys,

I'm having a few problems with my PC hanging shortly after booting up (icons appear on desktop, then they disappear and I'm just left with a static hour glass icon).

The only solution as yet seems to be opening task manager, clicking on user and then logging off.

This is what's running on startup and I was just wondering if anything stands out as being the cause?

I replaced my Hard drive over the weekend with a Sammy F1 1TB and did a fresh install of windows...but something's obviously going wrong.

Any ideas or advice would be great :)

Couple of those looked odd byt then I googled and they seem normal. Although you seem to have a Razer mouse and a Logitech mouse I think.

When you get in to task manager, have you tried stopping and then rerunning explorer.exe?

I have a Razer Deathadder and a Logitech Dinovo wireless keyboard (hence the logitech setpoint...which has now been uninstalled).

Uninstalling setpoint seemed to solve the problem (or so I thought) but after a second restart it kept hanging again.

I have a feeling it may be something to do with Nero 7, but I'll look into that when I get home. I did a quick Google last night and it appears that a programme called Nero Scout, which is installed with Nero 7, can be the cause of some issues.

I haven't tried stopping and restarting EXPLORER.EXE, but if it keeps hanging I'll give it a go (ending processes is safe to do, right?).

Anyway guys, thanks for taking the time to read & reply :)

Btw, this is my current spec:

Asus A8N-VM motherboard
Corsair TX 750w PSU
BFG GTX 260 OCX
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2.41 GHz)
2 GB Geil PC3200 DDR400 Dual Channel (4 x 512mb)
Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB
Windows XP Home Edition SP3 (32bit)

(sadly I can't afford to upgrade right now :()

I'd probably suggest running something like Furmark or ATI tool if you can get into a stable windows environment, just to make sure the 260 isn't flaking out. I really doubt its the video card, though the fact that the icons randomly disappear concerns me. It's worth checking out. I've seen stranger things happen with faulty video cards.

It certainly could be some other software or hardware causing the issue, but I would like to rule out the GC just in case. If it locks when running any 3D apps or artifacts in ATI tool, let me know and we can sort out the video card issue if that's the case.

Hmmm, I'm hoping that it won't be caused by my graphics card as I've only had it for a couple of months or so...but I'll try what you suggested when I'm back at my PC.

Thanks for the advice Jeff :)

Check task manager to see if msiexec is running.

I had a certain version of my NIC driver that at random times I would get the PC hanging on login. Killing msiexec would then complete the login process.

I'm pretty sure it was my NIC driver doing it as rolling back to an older version, and then installing a newer one when it was release seemed to solve it. I only ever had this issue with that one version.

Also try autoruns from microsoft sysinternals, as that shows you everything that loads at startup.

Hey guys, apologies for the thread revival...but I'm still having problems :(

It's so annoying because sometimes my PC boots up fine, and then sometimes it just keeps hanging! Sometimes it will hang during post (pic below) and other times it will hang once my desktop has loaded, as previously mentioned.

I'm wondering if perhaps it could be a bios issue and if flashing my bios might help? I'm slightly confused though as my current bios version (0908) isn't even listed on the Asus website?

Would it be worth a shot?

Hanging during POST means it's definitely not a software problem. I would check the following:

-Is it overheating?
-Are all your fans spinning (it's more common than you might think for cpu fans to conk out)
-Are your memory timings set correctly (bearing in mind that running 4 sticks of memory on an A64 puts a lot of pressure on the memory controller; I had to switch from 1T to 2T)

^ Ha Ha :)

Well, my PC doesn't appear to be overheating and all my fans are running ok...as for memory timings I think they're o.k too (?)

Regarding updating/flashing my bios, would it be worth doing anyway to see if it improves stability as my current bios (0908) isn't even listed on the Asus site? The most recent bios updates on the Asus site are 0902 (beta) or 0702...

I'm not sure how accurate HWMonitor and cpu-z are, but here's a screenshot of each:
