Ok, so most of you will read this thread and laugh, but it is literally something I have never had to do before, so this is my starting point. I'm all moved in to my place now and have all my furniture and stuff in, and now it's time to decor it a bit. I want to hang a fairly large mirror in the room and also some canvas's and photo frames around the rest of the place.

How do I go about hanging the mirror on the room wall above the fire surround? I know I need to get some appropriate fixings to take the weight but not sure which ones I need to get or what type of wall it is? When I tap across the wall with my knuckle it sounds hollow in some places and deep in others, so I'm guessing it's some form of plasterboard? Behind it is the external wall to the house so will have brick behind. Here is a pic of the wall

For similar walls, whats the best way to hang lesser weight items like canvas/photo frames?

The place is rented, landlords are sound and have said I can hang mirrors, pictures etc but I dont want to make a mess of it etc nor do I want to pay someone to come and do it (unless I really have to)

-50 man points I know, but I thought i'd ask anyway :D

Depends how you wanna hang the mirror really. One central plug/screw into the chimney breast and then string across your mirror back is one option. Alternatively you will mount the mirror with screw fixings into 2 or more drilled holes.

As for canvasses. We always used M3 velcro strips. They were brilliant and were removed without marking the walls. Command Strips they are called.

I guess one central screw in to the wall and then hang the mirror with wire from two hooks would be the best bet, but I don't care really, I just want it hung. The bit I am unsure about is getting a good enough strong single screw in the first place in to what I guess is plasterboard.

Cheers for the recommendation on the strips, totally forgot about them, will get some ordered

Just yesterday I hung a heavy mirror on the plasterboard wall using 2 of these - http://www.diy.com/departments/rawl...t-fixing-l40mm-dia4mm-pack-of-6/254514_BQ.prd

I didn't want to use a single screw to hold the mirror, it felt like too much weight on a single fixing but 2 of those fixings plus a couple of low profile hooks did the job very nicely.

These are brilliant.

I've used all sorts of plasterboard fixings, but as soon as there's quite a bit of weight, most have failed, apart from the above.

I used the fixing where you drill a metal plug right into the wall, then fix to that. Seemed rock solid for hanging blinds, but after 3 days it come down.

Hung them with the above fixings and still rock solid 2 months later.

Probably an 8mm masonry drill bit and some cut to length nylon wall plugs. You can get the nylon plugs on the popular auction site and I say cut to length because you want some fairly long screws. If you use conventional nylon wall plugs in a ready made size it will barely make it into the block work by the time its passed through the plasterboard and then the gap behind the plasterboard. I'd use a couple of screws for a mirror and about 3 or 4 inch screws.

For the mirror I'd suggest drilling a hole into masonry and getting some long plugs - two for sure.

If you need to string pictures then you can buy the wire and hook packs from somewhere like B&Q.

Those plastic hooks that you hammer in to plaster/block are great for canvas pictures - for large pictures I tend to use two hooks, not necessarily for the weight but it's easier to level with two hooks than one.

Lastly, I had a frame that needed to be hung from some ornate loop but I didn't want to see an exposed beige plastic hook so I just painted it black with acrylic paint and it turned out really well.
