I'm looking at getting a 125cc commuter type bike for me and the family to share to get a couple of us back on two wheels. When i was first into bikes, you went to jack woods and bought a honda, yamaha, suzuki etc.

Now i look on the 'bay and i see these cheap bikes which i understand are copies of old models made by the major manufacturers in the 80s and early 90s. Hongdou and so on. They look the part, seem reasonably easy to maintain, the dealers tend to say they can supply parts, and even with shipping and registration etc you can get a brand spanking new, really quite good looking bike for less than a grand - the one i'm looking at looks reminiscent of a 1980s suzuki. It's called a Haotian Arrow 125 and it's £740 + reg.

I've seen well used 125s from known manufacturers going for more than this. I'm cynical enough to believe the old saw about anything that seems too good to be true usually is, but they seem to have very good feedback on many different sellers.. Has anyone bought such a bike? any good? anybody with experience think they're worth it? any drawbacks?

Fine if you like bikes to fall apart and generally be made of melted down plastic cutlery and coathangers.

Spend your money on a tidy second hand bike from a brand you can trust. We don't even insure chinese bikes on any cover higher than Third Party Only.

Saw one after getting t-boned by a car, pulling out if a side road, 2 days ago, not very pretty and petrol tank split :P
Poor young girl on bike got a broken leg judging by the amount of screaming :(

Your money would be better spent on a second hand CG125. I bought a CG125 and once I had passed my test on it I sold it for the same price I had bought it for. The cheap chinese copies are unreliable, poorly built, hard to find replacment parts for and would be difficult to sell on.

plus when you phone for insurance they ask if its one of these cheap copys and load your premium or wont insure you at all .

Get a cg/nsr/dtr/gs and be happy insteady of buying a recycled hunk of junk .

the above accident could have happened on any bike.

The other posts about quality and insurance are telling. There's a reason hondas are going on for three grand new and these are 700 quid. A guy up my road has a b reg (1985) cub90 that has done more than 100,000 miles. I thought as much tbh but like i said i have no experience with these bikes. Actually, a part of me likes buying things that are seen as "truely crap" by n00bs and using them to great effect. Saying this i have a small part of me that says i should buy a old cub90 to laugh at and use for many miles. Now that i've had my strong suspicions about the quality of these fleabay specials, i shall probably go look at some new bikes, and keep my eye on the used bike market.

An old cub is properly screwed together and will do countless miles with only minor upkeep.

A shonky chinese copy of one...Won't.

RIGHT THAT SETTLES IT

cub90 it is. Going to go halfers with my dad on one. Being an aged design it should be fairly simple to maintain, being a honduh parts should be easy, and i'm betting it can be tuned up. Might talk to the neighbour about it - the "omg its so crap but also quite cool" angle - he's got experience with small stuff - my last bike was a ex pizza hut suzuki mini moped that had had some random 125cc engine bolted to it. It was fun but i made the mistake of selling it when i got a car. I've always liked the cub90 for its crapness image but bombproofness - i'm 6'1 and 16 stone and everyone says they will cope with my weight. Hardcore rat look c90 anyone? lol :D

My dad sold his fireblade and got a C90. He kept it for ages before he sold it and always said how much he loved it lol, nothing ever went wrong with it the whole time he had it.

There's a reason why Cub90's are all over the third world being ridden 8 up towing a trailer of cement bags, every day, for years.

Find yourself a better broker, cause that shouldn't be the case. We certainly do not load them in underwriting.

We restrict cover, but do not increase price.

In any case, CUB90's rock. good choice :P

LOL 87 quid a year to insure FC.. for someone used to getting £800+ quotes on cars, that's awesome to see lol :D

First company i thought of, bennets.. cheapness :D
