hard disc problem?

hi

recent a system file (hal.dll) has corrupted on my 300gb maxtor diamondmax. So i tried to repair it with the windows installation CD, which failed since it crashes wen its "examining" my ahrd disc. So i bought a new hdd a hitachi 80gb, i was planning to install windows on that so i can access the data in my 300gb to back it up. However i ran into 2 problems

1) what ever i downlaod off the internet it says its "corrupted" so i cant install anything (anti virus fire fox etc)

2) when i plug in my 300 gb and try to boot into my 80gb to back up the files i found that after the "windows" loading screen it just stays black instead of booting into windows.....

So any ideas why this is happening? or any otehr way of recueing my data from my 300gb.

P.S- these are SATA hard discs

haha i dont actully ahve 1, need to sneak into my bros room while he sint looking xD


so, in short i need to reinstall windows with new SATA drivers and files should install and i should be able to boot up and back up my old stuff?

(also do i jsut grab the SATA drivers off my mobo's web site?)

sorry for double post.....

i have reinstalled windows, didnt do f6 since i couldnt find the driver, programs will now install properly but the interesting thing is.

when i pluged in my 300gb it worked at 1st but then the second time i rebooted it doesnt work, and now it doesnt work again.....

any ideas whats happening?

UPDATE - i think i have located the problem, i was jsut fiddling with the sata cable until i cam across a jumper, which i found out was to switch 3gb to 1.5 .And as my hitachi was 1.5 i made the maxtor the same as well. So i m abcking everything up now, and hoepfully it will boot up next time too :D

active armour(i dont know what that is)?? mine is the A8N SLI SE board.

Anyways.... ive solved the abck up problem however the corruption problem is still here, this was already a fresh install of windows. I have even swaped this PCs ram with my other Pc's ram to make sure the ram isnt causing the problem. What ever i downlaod i cannot install.....

please help, i need this PC quite urgently .....
