Hard Disk Backup Software?

Look at Acronis TrueImage 9. You need packet-writing sfotware installed to back up directly to DVD-RW (don't think it works directly to DVD-R's but I only tried Nero's which caused so many problems elsewhere)
I normally just specify another drive, and limit the size of each file to the size of a DVD - then write those files onto blanks using ONES

True Image is the best I've tried. I had no problems backing up to DVD-R's

The Windows backup facility backs up and restores files no problem, the image will need to be burned to DVD with Nero (for example) after the backup. If you're wanting a recovery solution then True Image or Norton Ghost will be a better bet. True Image has a recovery CD option that can read from DVDs but not write to them, you'll need to backup to another hard drive and then burn the image to DVD (a bit awkward if you don't have a second hard drive though).

I'm currently trying out Acronis Drive Image. It was certainly esay to do a drive C: image on to a second HDD and create the bootable CD.
But I have a question. In the event of a restore, is all the fragmenation of the original restored too?
If not, DriveImage might be a very fast way to defragment a drive.
