Hard disk verses download

I'd rather shop online for retail games with first class delivery than download a massive game which I have to do overnight or during the day and if during the day the internet is basically unuseable.

It depends on the size of the game, if its less than 8gb I'll buy it digitally if its a lot larger then I'll get the hard copy.

I pretty much exclusively use steam.

Recently I bought Shogun TW2 and the expansion as a 'hard copies' from Amazon as they were considerably cheaper than buying through Steam.
Funny thing is, they came with steam keys so the discs have never left the box.
It's the future.

(great games too :D)

So you decided to download 30GB rather than install it off the disc right in front of you? That is faster and more convenient how?

I just download, it's easier, you can't lose it once it's registered to your account.

By the time you have actually found a shop that even stocks PC games anymore you could have downloaded it 20 times.

The only thing in my house that has an optical drive is the Xbox 360. What do you think? ;)
How do you go about installing Windows after a format?

USB boot drive I'm guessing? Just curious. Don't think I could build a pc without putting in a optical drive just yet.

Ah wait, do you have a external optical drive.

I install Windows (and OS X) off a USB drive, quicker and easier ;)

No external optical drive, everything is downloaded, I haven't used optical drives on a computer for years, my MacBook had one, I took it out to put another hard drive in its place :p

what if you wanted to watch a dvd at your pc...oh I guess you could download it, nvm.

i'm sure theres still some good reasons to have a optical drive.

Sold all my DVDs :D

Obviously I'd have a different opinion if I didn't have a fast internet connection with no usage limits or FUP, but as I have a fast connection and no limits, I embrace the demise of optical media.

Take your head out of your ***.

Click... do other stuff... it is installed. That for me is more convenient than swapping discs.

Lets be honest, 30GB installs from MULTIPLE DVD's is a faff and is far from "quick" owing to the fact the data is often heavily compressed.

Download speed is not a problem for myself, even if it is for you.

What he said.

surely not everything is available to download, and theres a wider range on offer if you include optical media?

talking mainly about movies and tv.

Digital copy everytime if possible because:

1) Immediate access rather than waiting for delivery
2) I have BT Infinity 80MB now
3) Takes up less space in the house
4) You can access your game anywhere anytime if you need to reinstall and don't have the discs with you for some reason

I prefer disks.

What with currently living in the UK's worst county for broadband it takes an eternity downloading. If you've ever had to download anything at 200kb/s maximum you'll feel the pain of it.

I prefer download, less clutter in house and also don't have to go looking for disks when I reinstall.

If you get banned on steam you would have to deserve it and I couldn't care less about that.

Having 70mb BT games download in a few minutes anyway.

Not sure what your point is there, ADSL is fine for downloading games, or anything else.

I was refering to situations like that.

ADSL for the MAJORITY is the pits.

;)

For the majority? I'm not sure about that.

In any case, I'm 'only' on 8Mbps and it's still plenty fast enough for downloading stuff from Steam.

Physical media, yuck.

Can get damaged, still has drm, takes up space in house, actually have to go shop or order online and wait.

I hate physical media. Far to many cons and no pros. Well some might say resale, but I only buy stuff when it's cheap. So selling it wouldnt benefit me at all. But that's really about the only pro. Even then some physical games you cant resale anyway as their registerd to your account for online play.

I'd only get a physical copy if it was cheaper, and then use the key to get it digitally. I bin it after that, wish the big sellers would give you the option of a key by e-mail.
