it'll backup/restore from a usb drive no problem. it will just be slower than doing it from an ide/sata drive. :)

cheers thanks for that is there any free versions that you know of in back up software

cheers ;)

I use Synctoy - you can basically configure it to synchronise files/folders from one place to another.

I plug my external drive into my fileserver once a week, run Synctoy and jobs done.

Google Synctoy - its a Microsoft power tool IIRC

EDIT: In fact, doesn't Vista come with its own backup tool? Or is that just Business/Ultimate?

EZBackitup is great.

Like Synctoy it doesn't compress the data or anything like that, it just copies everything over like a mirror. It means that you'll need a big backup drive. If you back up two harddrives with 80GB of data on each, you're going to need a 200GB+ backup drive, however storage is so cheap these days, you can get 750GB/1TB drives without breaking the bank.

IMO it is far more reliable than utilites that compress your data, not only do you not run the risk of the compressed file becoming corrupt, but you don't have to uncompress it all to restore one file.
