Basically, my Dad is getting a new laptop, my brother would be getting his old one, but brother wants to take it on holiday with him tomorrow, dad's laptop hasn't arrived yet, so brother's taking mine, and I'm getting dads old one.

Long story short, I'm looking for a free way to create an image of my laptops hard drive, stick it on an external USB drive, then copy it onto the other laptop (Its exactly the same specs, bought at the same time, so no problem, right?)

Is this possible, without hardware conflicts? I mean, its the same hardware in each laptop, but things like the wireless adapter would have different MAC addresses, are other pieces of hardware like this, and would it cause problems?
Or would it just be easier to start from scratch? I'd rather not have to do all that, but will if its easier.
And if it is possible, I know that Ghost gets thrown around when people ask for this, but I only need to do this once, so would rather avoid commercial software.

Thanks in advance

Forgot one thing, Windows licence key won't be the same. & by hardware being the same do you mean exact same model laptop? If not, could be an issue because components can vary even in same manufacture laptop if model numbers don't match (normally the one printed bottom) :)

But if it was me, I'd clean install - i.e. backup my data & use the recovery partition/discs

Its exactly the same, bought at the same time, same place, same specs.

And ~D~ I meant my 500Gb external hard drive, not a flash stick :)
