Hard drive enclosures - quick question

I am right in thinking that the hard drive enclosures allow you to use an internal ide or sata hdd like an external hard disk?

If this is true is there any disadvantage to using an internal one like this as opposed to a external one (external ones aren't built any tougher?)

At the moment I am just thinking about my backup strategy. If I bought an 80 gb internal ide hard disk. backed up my system disk onto it and kept it connected in a usb external enclosure. Then if the one I am using breaks, I can take the backup out of the enclosure and use as a normal ide disk

Does that make sense and is it possible?

Any recommendations on which enclosures are toughest/nicest/etc.

(I wouldn't really be transporting it much but as its a backup I want it to be well protected)
