I have recently moved to OSX and I have a problem with my USB hard drive. When ever I put the computer to sleep with the hard drive connected, when it wakes up again I am greeted with an error that the hard drive wasn't disconnected properly etc. Is there a way, a script or something, to properly eject the hard drive when I put the computer to sleep, then have it connect again when the computer wakes?

This would help me out too,not trying to hijack your thread ...

I have the same issue with a powerd usb dock (infact i have two) into my uMBP i have two 4 usb docks because i use ableton live DAW and need the extra ports for keyboards, interface and midi controller,i even eject the usb external hard drive prior to shutting down.
The second external hard drive with Time Machine on dosn't give me any prob's though just the one with my samples on?

btw i even get the error when i cold boot?

just found this from Appl'es Time Machine forum..

Hi again,
I was in town and popped into the apple store and asked the staff. They said that when the imac goes into sleep mode it cuts the power to the usb ports and therefore my usb powered 2.5inch drive. For this reason it is not 'unmounted' in the traditional sense and so when the imac wakes up it gives the improper eject error. This would not happen with an externally powered drive hence my TM working fine.

and to Pondini, yes you are right on all counts, my post probably should be on another thread, in my defence this is the first time i have used the forums and found the discussion via a google search in the first place.

Maybe this information will help someone, it has answered my question....

makes sense to me ;)

that is not the case with me, my hard drive is exteranlly powered and yet still has an error message when I reboot. But as I type this I have realised that both my devices are plugged into a power saving unit, which cuts power to the hard drive when the mac is off.

I would still like a script to mount/unmount the drive, as I dont like having my hard drive on if its not in use, hence the power saver thing.
