Hard Drive Failure

Hi, The hard drive in my late 2011 13" MBP Has failed, I've had a look on the Toshiba website and I've found out that I'll have to return the laptop to apple, the problem is that I've replaced the optical drive with an SSD and I can't find the optical drive to swap out with the SSD and it's caddy.

Will the product be accepted by Apple? Also are they likely to send off the laptop for replacement or just replace the hard drive there and then?

I would purchase a new hard drive and fit it myself but I'm trying to minimize on unnecessary expense at the moment as I'm saving for uni.

AFIK replacing hard drives and optical drives is permitted and not frowned upon by Apple. Certainly the two MBPs I've had, and done the same to, have not had any problems going in for repair with Amsys.

Optical drive replacement will void the warranty. If the machine is out of warranty and you are paying for the replacement they should be ignoring that. That said, bloodiedathame has previous experience that I don't have so I'd trust his advice when it comes to the actual service being performed.

I did take mine to a preferred provider of Apple rather than direct. Maybe that makes a difference.

We technically would have to decline that repair if it was a warranty one.

Why were you looking at Toshiba's website? They sell MBP now?

The HDD is a Toshiba Model.

Ah, I see, but very strange logic.

That is like looking at the Peugeot website when your engine blows up, when you drive a Mini Cooper.

OP, I would find that Optical drive and put it back. As PardontheWait says, what you've done void the warranty.

Surely Apple aren't going to just replace a disk in a 2011 MBP for nothing? Or am I missing something?

Not really, The Drive is manufactured by Toshiba so I presumed the warranty would lie with them? None the less I'll just have to stump up for a new drive then.

It's a bit weird though, I brought an external USB caddy a while ago and backed up all my data when the drive first exhibited signs of failing, I used Macdrive on my windows pc and all the data is now safely backed up on there and in another place, my MacBook refuses to recognise the drive now although it worked perfectly in the Usb Caddy and I don't think it's the sata cable in the Mac causing problems as I've used the SSD in the slot that I now have the HDD for a while and had no problems..
