hard drive from one ps3 to another?

I've got a mate with a broken(and binned) ps3, and he's wanting to put his old hard drive in a new ps3, so he can continue his game of GTA4. I don't have one myself, but a quick deek around the internet says it'll need formatted when he puts the new drive in. Any way around that?

Only way would have been to backup the save to a USB stick but now that isn't possible anymore.

It needs to be formatted. If he backed up his saves on a USB drive, then he's fine - eitherwise not to much.

You can use the old drive on a new ps3, but it'll be instantly formatted, thus it'll wipe all the data.
